Lenny Carlson - Pool Deck Project
Summer 2005

Welcome to our summer project. We decided to put in a pool as we have always wanted one (especially my wife) and now our kids are old enough to use it safely ‘enuff said let’s get to work.

We decided on a soft sided pool for a couple of reasons
1.) It has a unique frame system and seems vertically more sturdy
than the metal sided pools.
2.) I can set up the entire thing start to finish by myself (with some help
from my family and neighbors as needed). Anyway here goes…..

The pool is already in place and we are filling it up. The pool setup (after I graded the ground level) only took 40 minutes to complete. Ready to fill !!! By the way this is May 10th, 2005..the fist day of filling. (view facing North)   General picture showing layout and relief of our yard. (view facing South)

Another picture showing layout of excavation. (view facing South)   This picture taken from the lower part of our back yard shows how much elevation difference there is. (view facing East)

Good planning will help a great deal the farther the project goes along. I almost didn’t leave enough room for the filter and heater to clear the deck rails. It worked out but was getting close.   This shows part of the area we will have to retain. Yep, it’s all sand, great to build on but, tough to keep from collapsing during construction. By the way the pool is full – 48” x 24’ dia. Pool took 12 hours to fill with a 1” water line off the sprinkler main. (view facing NE)

The start of the lower (1st of 2) retaining walls. We made this using 4”x6” treated stacked on edge with 48” rebar drilled through the lower 2 courses into the ground and 12” galv. spikes between each layer. Laying this wall out took some planning to make sure we had enough room between the face of wall and the pool frame to fit the Dek-Block Piers ? This step was not a lot of fun as it was 90 plus degrees and we had 50 rebars and about 240 spikes to pound in oh, well (git err dun.)   Here the wall is almost done. It has been a long day and now it’s Miller time. You will notice my dog “Hunter” in a lot of these pictures. She was my companion all day everyday rain or shine. She made sure I knew she was there laying down on the boards, tools, sand piles. Whatever I needed to use she was laying on it.

Another view of the wall before we start to backfill it.   The SE side of the pool with the backfill in place. To keep compaction solid enough to build on within a few days of this, we built up the fill (sand) in layers and sprinkled with water between layers which provided the compaction I wanted.
